Arbeite Hart, Hart Spielen is an artist book compiling unsolicited advice and intrusive thoughts experienced during mental illness, combining photography and text by Kate Schultze with graphic design and screenprinting by Fraser Briggs.
The photographs were made at a rehabilitation facility in Germany using a thermal toy camera, printed on receipt paper. Schultze photographed herself and the facility’s spaces and surroundings, excluding other patients. The text draws on a lived experience of mental illness beginning in adolescence, intensified by the sudden loss of her father.
Drawing on ergodic fiction, each spread carries a distinct layout matched to its paired image, with typography that shifts register across every page. The collaboration extends a working relationship from a previous publication, brought together here by a shared biographical parallel.
